The work that we do, most of the time, is unseen and thankless. It is the stage lighting for the actors, the underside of the tapestry, the foundation upon which the auditorium rests.
The work that we do is the underpinning of our entire modern society, ignored by most until there is an issue and generally celebrated only by those in the know. We are relied on entirely and yet often not considered.
As a technology practitioner, it’s common to feel unseen, taken for granted and not fully appreciated. It’s common, as is with any service industry, to be on the receiving end of unrealistic expectations or even emotional outbursts in the midst of already pushing yourself 110% to simultaneously save the day. The work that we do implicitly requires sacrifice in the name of service, and sometimes the lack of gratitude can dull the light we use to guide our way.
In these moments, it’s even possible for us to begin to diminish the work that we do: “We aren’t saving lives, this isn’t brain surgery,” and the like.
But: show me a hospital experiencing a network outage, and I’ll show you chaos. Show me a financial institution facing a security breach, and I’ll show you pandemonium. Show me a software bug that caused half the world’s computers to crash overnight, and I’ll show you the tens of thousands of heroes who worked tirelessly to fix it.
To all my fellow IT practitioners across the industry and, indeed, all those engaged in acts of service: we see you, and we appreciate you 🙏
The work that we do has its challenges, but the outcomes we help to create make this world an iteratively better place 🌎
💡 Take pride in the fact that we are the ones called upon to save the day, and keep this impact in mind during those moments when your passion is challenged.
💪 Take pride in knowing that even though we’re not always going to be seen, that just means that more often than not we’re doing it right.
📈 Take pride in the success we create through others and their outcomes, as we play a pivotal role in all of it.
Take pride in the work that we do – the world is counting on us ❤️
